Common Law Admission Test

CLAT

CLAT which is an acronym of Common Law Admission Test is the answer to the years of discrepancies faced by most private law schools in a country like India. Aspiring students in law were often faced with the issue of non-uniformity in entrance tests conducted by this private law schools. The effect of this is that it becomes somehow difficult to prepare for this test as an aspiring student. After series of conventions, couple of ligations and several meetings of stakeholders in the education sector of India, a consensus were reached which finally gave birth to CLAT. Although, CLAT took place for the very first time in the year 2008, it never gained popular acceptance until 2015 when it was consensually agreed upon as a unified examination body for Law students by 16 National Law Universities of India.

What more should I know about CLAT to sit for this test?

  • Admissibility

This is to say who are who are expected to apply for CLAT and will be considered? CLAT is solely for anyone pursuing career in law. However the set standard is completion of HSE. You are also eligible if you have 12th level study which is a criterion for being admitted to an undergraduate program in Law.  CLAT is also mandatory for students of Masters Program in Law to sit for before being awarded LL.M.

  • Mandatory subjects

There are compulsory subjects a candidate of CLA must be prepared for in order to achieve a level of commendable success. The first of this subject is quantitative reasoning. Quantitative reasoning deals on basic arithmetic. It involves the use of the thinking faculty to provide solution to numerical problems which do not require any pre-known formula but common sense of how figures relate to address common problems. Another subject is Comprehension in English. As a candidate of CLAT you are expected to be above average in the use of lexis and structure. Understanding of figure of speech and parts of speech are also vital aspects of breaking through CLAT’s Comprehension in English. In addition, good knowledge of antonym and synonym will also do well in Comprehension in English. Others are knowledge of current affairs in India and around the world.

  • Duration of examination

CLAT’s examination is expected to last not more than 2 hours. Within the space of these 120 minutes, candidates are expected to answer approximately 2 questions per minute. This brings to a total of 200 questions to be answered within 2 hours.
